Privacy Policy for ScreenDemons
Our Privacy Policy is critical to establishing and maintaining trust with you. At ScreenDemons, we believe you should know what data we collect, how we use it, and have meaningful control over both.
This Privacy Policy describes how we collect and use your Personal Data when you use the ScreenDemons mobile application (the “Platform”). By “Personal Data,” we mean data that relates to you as an identified or identifiable natural person. For example, Personal Data may include your name or your email address.
Who We Are. As used in this Privacy Policy, “we,” “us” or “our” means ScreenDemons.
1. Apple Screen Time API & Family Controls
ScreenDemons relies heavily on Apple’s Family Controls and Screen Time API (DeviceActivity) to provide its core functionality, such as tracking your daily screen time targets and enforcing multiplayer challenges. Because this data is highly sensitive, we adhere to strict handling protocols:
- No Granular Tracking: We do not track, collect, or transmit detailed, app-by-app usage history (e.g., how many minutes you spent on specific applications) to our servers.
- Metadata Only: The Platform only transmits aggregate metadata strictly necessary for gameplay (e.g., your total daily screen time, or a binary pass/fail signal triggered when a threshold is crossed locally on your device).
- No Third-Party Selling: We never sell, barter, trade, or rent access to your screen time data, usage metadata, or Personal Data to advertisers, data brokers, or any third parties.
2. Personal Data We Collect
We collect Personal Data automatically and via information you provide to us to monitor, support, and improve the Platform.
### Information You Provide
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address, username, display name, and avatar image.
- Authentication: We use secure OAuth providers (Sign in with Apple, Google Sign-In) to authenticate your identity. We do not store raw passwords.
### Automatically Collected Information We collect Personal Data automatically about how our users interact with the Platform, including internet protocol (IP) addresses, device and operating system information, access location, and time stamps. We also collect aggregate gameplay data, such as your ELO rating, current streaks, longest streaks, and challenge history.
The legal basis for this processing of Personal Data is our legitimate interest to develop our product, keep the Platform running safely, and enable us to enhance your user experience.
3. How We Use Personal Data We Collect
In general, we process Personal Data only when you consent to the processing, when it is necessary for the performance of our services, when it is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation, or based on our legitimate interests.
We use the Personal Data collected in the following ways:
- To present, operate, and improve the Platform.
- To calculate ELO ratings, streaks, and challenge outcomes securely.
- To display multiplayer leaderboards to your accepted friends.
- To respond to technical problems or customer support requests.
- To send you push notifications (e.g., when a friend invites you to a challenge, or when a challenge ends).
- To investigate or deter against fraudulent, unauthorized, or illegal activity.
We do not use automated decision-making, including profiling, that produces legal effects concerning you.
4. Sharing Information with Others
Unless prohibited by applicable law, we may share your information as follows:
- Service Providers: We may share your information with third-party vendors as necessary for them to perform their functions (e.g., secure database hosting via Supabase, email delivery, or crash analytics). These providers are required to keep your information confidential and are not allowed to use Personal Data they receive from us for any other purpose.
- Legal Requirements: In response to a court order, subpoena, or warrant, or to comply with a legal requirement or cooperate with an investigation.
- Protection of Rights: To identify persons who may be violating the law, our Terms of Service, or who may be otherwise misusing the Platform.
- Business Transfers: In connection with a divestiture, merger, acquisition, sale, or similar transaction.
5. Information Security
We understand the need for user privacy, and we maintain reasonable and appropriate security procedures to protect your information from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction. Access to user data is strictly limited to specific individuals who are trained to respect user privacy and restricted to their need for such information for business purposes.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
We will retain Personal Data for as long as it is necessary in relation to the purposes for which it was collected or otherwise processed.
You have the right to request the complete deletion of your data at any time:
- You can initiate account deletion directly from the Settings menu inside the Platform.
- Upon requesting deletion, a 24-hour grace period begins. After this period, all Personal Data, challenge history, and screen time logs are permanently purged from our servers (within 48 hours total).
- If you delete your account, any multiplayer challenges you previously created will be anonymized to protect the history and continuity of the remaining participants.
7. Children
The Platform is not intended, designed for, or directed to children under the age of 13. We do not intentionally collect or maintain information about anyone under the age of 13. If it comes to our attention that we have received personal information about anyone under the age of 13, such information will be immediately deleted from our records.
8. Your Rights (GDPR & CCPA)
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access the Personal Data we hold about you and to correct, update, amend, suppress, delete, or otherwise modify any Personal Data where it is inaccurate. You may also have the right to object to the use or processing of your Personal Data or withdraw consent at any time.
To exercise any rights, including requests for data portability or removal, please contact us using the information below. When updating your Personal Data, we may ask you to verify your identity before we can act upon your request.
9. Product Analytics & Experiments
If you choose “Allow” when we ask, we use PostHog (a product analytics provider, hosted in the EU) to understand how the Platform is used and to test improvements.
What we collect: which screens you open, which features you use (for example creating a goal or starting a challenge), counts and choices, your app version and platform, and which version of an experiment you were shown. You are identified only by a random account ID.
What we never send to PostHog: your name, email, username, photos, anything you type (stakes, goal or circle names), which apps you use or block, or exact screen-time figures. We do not use advertising identifiers, we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, we switch off IP-based location, and we do not record your screen.
Legal basis: your consent. You can say no when asked, and you can turn this off at any time in Profile → Usage analytics; we then stop sending events. Data is kept for up to 12 months. To have your analytics data deleted, delete your account or contact us.
10. Subscriptions
Screen Demons Premium is a subscription sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Payments are handled by Apple or Google; we never see your card details. We use RevenueCat and Superwall to process and present subscriptions, and we keep a record of whether your subscription is active and when it ends, so that Premium works on your account.
11. Changes to this Policy
From time to time, we may change this policy to conform with changes to our business or as the law requires. We reserve the right to change this Privacy Policy at any time with notice to you, which notice requirement may be satisfied with a popup upon your login, an update to this page, or other industry-standard forms of notice.
